Nell Swain Melvin, 98, died Feb. 25, 1995, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Mrs. Melvin was born in Old Trap, N.C., but had been an area resident most of her life. She was a retired bookkeeper and office manager and was last employed at the Pine Tree Inn Restaurant. She was the beloved wife of Charles W. Melvin who preceded her in death Dec. 1, 1961. She was a member of Lynnhaven United Methodist Church, where she was a charter member and the oldest living member. Mrs. Melvin was honored by the Church Womens Society with the Nell Melvin Circle named after her. She grew up in the Corolla Currituck Lighthouse and was active as a historian for many years. She was also active in the restoration development of the lighthouse.
Survivors include three daughters, Marie Dozier Guard of Currituck, N.C., Gay Stidham Day of Virginia Beach and Carole M. and her husband, Wilfred P. Large, of Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Milburn A. Guard Jr., Peter M. Day, Victoria D. Magee, Charnell L. Thomas, Lance C. Large, Jana L. Kuenzli and Brian C. Large; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many wonderful and loving friends.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Lynnhaven United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bruce Tuttle. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. in Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel. Donations may be made to the church building fund or to the Robert Edward Day Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Virginia Wesleyan College.
