Col. Walter C. Blake, U.S. Army (Ret.), of the 1500 block of Blue Ridge Road, passed away in Midlothian, Va., on Feb. 26, 1995, at the home of his daughter after an extended illness.
Walter Charles Blake was born in Doniphan County, Kan., to Clara Elizabeth and Frank Blake. He attended the University of Kansas and played the saxophone and clarinet as well as piano in Buddy Blake's Band, playing the Midwest and riverboats. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1959, then worked for the Department of Public Works, City of Norfolk, until his retirement in 1981. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was funny, kind and generous and will be deeply missed by those he left behind.
He is survived by one brother, Clarence ``Toot'' Blake of Troy, Kan.; four daughters, Sandra ``Swan'' Blake of Virginia Beach, Patricia Anne Farley of Chesapeake, Elizabeth Flitcraft of Midlothian and Lucinda Riley of Charlottesville; nine grandchildren, Robin Gray Owens of Fort Meade, Md., Lisa Jean Stafford of Los Angeles, Stephanie V. Waterfield of Virginia Beach, Michelle Farley Griggs of Andrews, S.C., Jennifer E. Riley of Charlottesville, Geoffrey D. Farley of Chesapeake, Elizabeth R. Farley of Chesapeake, Jessica Flitcraft of Midlothian and Andrew ``Charlie'' Flitcraft, also of Midlothian; and one great-grandchild, Richard A. Owens of Fort Meade.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery when our father will join our beloved mother in eternal rest. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, to receive friends.
