BURGLAR ELUDES BEACH SWAT TEAM

A SWAT team searched unsuccessfully Monday for a burglar who authorities believed was armed and hiding inside a police officer's condominium.

Police, fearing the burglar had found guns that the officer kept at the Georgetown Place residence, requested the SWAT team as a precaution. When the team entered the residence about 5:30 p.m., no one was inside.

The burglar apparently slipped away before the SWAT team surrounded the condominium.

Neighbors and police said the officer returned home from court about 1:45 p.m. and saw his front door pried open and someone peeking from a window. He called for police assistance.

Police evacuated several neighbors from the condominiums near the intersection of Independence and Pembroke boulevards.

``They kicked me out of my house,'' said Robert Marlin, a 55-year-old retired civil service worker who was cooking dinner when the police knocked on his door. ``They asked us to leave for a while because they didn't know what was going to happen.''

Police spokesman Mike Carey said the residence apparently had been burglarized, but he didn't know what had been taken.

The police officer who lived in the residence was not identified. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
