Ruth R. Smith of 19980 Popes Station Road, Capron, departed this life on Sunday, Feb. 26, 1995, in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin.
A native of Southampton County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie W. and Roberta Barrett Rice. She was the widow of the late Jesse Lee Smith.
She was a member of Pine Level Baptist Church, Capron, where she served as church clerk and president of the Senior Usher Board. She also served as corresponding secretary for the Southeastern Missionary Baptist Church Union and secretary for the Four Counties and Adjacent Counties Usher Union. Ruth was also a member of the Antioch Chapter (NU)72 Order of the Eastern Star Prince Hall affiliated, where she served as past worthy matron and treasurer. She was a retired employee of the Southampton County School System.
Survivors include two sons, Jesse Howard Smith of Largo, Md., and Shelton Wayne Smith of Capron; two brothers, Dr. Charlie W. Rice Jr. of Madison Heights, Va., and Addis ``Pie'' Rice of Baltimore; one granddaughter; an aunt, Elizabeth Barrett Blackwell of Glen Burnie, Md.; a great-aunt, Amanda Sledge of Ahoskie, N.C.; five sisters-in-law, among them Brownie Rice of Hampton, Va.; and a special cousin, Mary Rice Parker of Hampton.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 4, at 1 p.m. in Shiloh Baptist Church, 615 Clay St., Emporia, Va., the Rev. Melvin Early, Eulogist, and the Rev. James A. Carey, presiding. Interment will follow in Pine Level Baptist Church Cemetery, Capron.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 3, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Pine Level Baptist Church, Capron. The family may be contacted by calling 658-4282 or 634-2162.
Her remains may be viewed at the Pearson-Bond Funeral Service, 556 Halifax St., Emporia, on Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. only.
