Jessie Willis ``Susie'' Matthews, 89, a retired nurse, died Feb. 27, 1995, in Raleigh.
Mrs. Matthews was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., and was the widow of Arthur M. Matthews. She attended schools in Winston-Salem and later attended Wingate College, Wingate, N.C. After graduation she entered nursing school at Norfolk Protestant Hospital, now Sentara Norfolk General. After graduation she moved to Virginia Beach, where she lived and worked until her retirement in the late 1960s. She moved to Raleigh in August of 1970 and was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Nora Phoebe and Henry Wesley Stanford.
Survivors include a son, Art Matthews of Virginia Beach; a sister, Inez S. Cook of Raleigh; a brother, Wiley G. Stanford of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Craig Matthews and Brett Matthews of Virginia Beach.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Rosewood Memorial Park by Pastor Gary R. Lyerly. The family will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Forest Hills Baptist Church, 3110 Clark Ave., Raleigh, N.C. 27607.
