CHESAPEAKE OFFICER HURT DURING CHASE OF STOLEN CAR

A police officer was slightly injured Tuesday night when his car spun out of control and struck a tree on Volvo Parkway as he chased a stolen vehicle.

Two police cars began chasing the vehicle about 7:15 p.m. at Greenbrier Mall, said police spokesman Tony Torres. The pursuit headed down Greenbrier Parkway to Volvo Parkway. After the cars passed Battlefield Boulevard, Torres said, the second police car in pursuit hit the grass median on Volvo Parkway, spun out and struck a tree.

The pursuit continued to Crystalwood Circle, where the four suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fled. The suspects, three of them juveniles, were soon apprehended.

The adult, Tony Stancil, 18, of Portsmouth was charged with one count each of auto theft, reckless driving and eluding police. Auto theft charges against the juveniles are pending.

The stolen car, a 1987 Acura, was taken from Richmond, Torres said.

The police officer, whom Torres did not identify, was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Torres said police used other cruisers to prevent cross traffic from entering two intersections through which the chase passed.
