BARCROFT RECEIVES AWARD: Jean E. Barcroft, associate broker with R.L. Stephenson Realty Inc. in Smithfield, was recognized as a recipient of the Gold Award for 1994 given by the Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors at its annual awards banquet held recently at the Holiday Inn in Hampton.
In past years, Barcroft has received the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards plus the Diamond Award for receiving the Gold Award for five consecutive years. Barcroft, who has been licensed in Virginia since 1979, is licensed as a broker in North Carolina also.
A member of the local, state and national association of Realtors, she is a graduate of the Realtors Institute and has attained the Certified Residential Specialist designation.
SCHOOL RECEIVES DONATION: John F. Kennedy Middle School recently received a $1,500 donation from Sam's Club to help one of the sixth-grade teams purchase a new multimedia computer.
Sixth-graders and teachers on the ``Pride Team'' have worked for the last several months to raise enough money for the computer via the sale of various snack products purchased at Sam's Club.
In December, several students wrote to the management of Sam's Club about their fund-raising project and how they planned to use the new computer in their classrooms. Managers were so impressed with the letters that the company decided to provide the cash donation.
DEAN'S LIST STUDENTS: Jennifer Susan Brown, a freshman at the College of William and Mary, achieved a 3.87 grade-point average and has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester.
Brown is a 1994 graduate of Churchland High School.
She has been invited to join the Phi Beta Sigma and the Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies at the College of William and Mary.
She is the daughter of Diane B. Snellinger of Brittany Lane, Suffolk.
Richard Lee Andrews II of Suffolk has been named to the dean's list for the second semester at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.
JOHNSON WINS AWARD: Tony Johnson, a former Suffolk resident, has been awarded Johnson the Rockwell Space Operations Co.'s Sustained Superior Performance Award for outstanding service to the space shuttle program.
A 1984 graduate of John Yeates High School and a 1989 graduate of Tuskegee University, Johnson earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering.
After graduation, Johnson accepted a position as a space shuttle trajectory design engineer for Rockwell Space Operations Co. in Houston.
He is also an abort support flight controller. His responsibilities include monitoring space shuttle systems in the mission control center during lift-off and providing abort support to the flight dynamics officer.
Johnson resides in Houston with his wife, the former Lisa Cooper of Suffolk. They have a two-year-old daughter, Ashley.
Johnson is the son of Clarence and Carrie Johnson of Woodland Trail, Suffolk.
SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED: The Suffolk-Nansemond Branch of the NAACP has awarded two scholarships to local college freshmen, who are Suffolk residents.
Recipients of the M. Fleeta Gayle Scholarship are Tameka Johnson and Robin Williams.
Johnson is majoring in mathematics/engineering at Virginia Union University in Richmond. Williams is a biology/pre-med major at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, N.C. MEMO: Thumbs Up recognizes accomplishments and good deeds of people living in
