If you're in the mood to learn a new skill, refine a hobby or just take in beauty created by others, area museums can accommodate you this month.
Offerings include everything from a concert commemorating Youth Art Month to an exhibit of sewing paraphernalia. Here's the schedule at area museums:
RIDDICK'S FOLLY
March 5 - Film, ``A Common Wealth of Virginia,'' a survey of women covering more than 300 years. Free, 2 p.m.
March 12 - ``Mother-daughter tea With Mrs. Mary Taylor Riddick,'' 2 p.m. Actress portraying one of home's first residents shares stories about raising 14 children in 1837 in Suffolk. Reservations by March 8; $4, Riddick's Folly newsletter subscribers; others, $5.
March 19 - Film, ``First Ladies.'' Free, 2 p.m.
SUFFOLK MUSEUM
Exhibit celebrating Girl Scout Week, including artifacts and projects by troops and individual members.
Pastels I, for students with little or no drawing experience, through March 28, 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays. Debbie Hobbs, instructor. Fee, $30. Bring pastels and charcoal paper/pad.
Pastels II, for intermediates, 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays. Frances Beamon, instructor. Fee, $30. Individual instruction, critique at end of session. Bring pastels and charcoal paper.
March 4 - Beginning quilting, 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, through April 8. Fee, $25. Instructor, Emily Dalton. Bring off-white sewing thread and scissors. Needles, fabrics and batting supplied.
March 7 - Intermediate drawing for children, 8-10 years old. Instructor, Gail Saunders. Fee $20 for Art League members, $23 for others. Bring good drawing pad, pencils, eraser and ruler. Registration deadline March 3. Sponsored by Suffolk Art League and the museum.
March 7 - Suffolk Photography Club's 11th annual contest, ``Pets and Animals.''
March 8, 15 and 22 - Photography composition, 6:30-8:30 p.m., by Pamela Host. Fee $25. Weekly assignments for critique and lessons.
March 13, 15, 17 and 18 - ``Pre-School Picassos,'' children 3-5 years old, 10 to 11 a.m. Fee $10. Showing and reception for parents and grandparents at last session.
March 19 - Lakeland High School Drama and Chorus concert, 3 p.m., commemorating ``Youth Art Month.'' Free.
March 23 to April 13 - Intermediate quilting, 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays. Instructor is Emily Dalton. Fee $25. Bring off-white sewing thread and scissors. Needles, fabrics and batting supplied.
March 25 - Pysanky, Ukrainian egg decorating, for senior high students and adults, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Materials supplied. Bring bag lunch. Fee $20, or $34 for this class and the one following.
March 26 - Scherenschnitte, German paper cutting, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fee $20, or $34 for this class and the one preceding it. Bring pair of small, sharp-pointed scissors and an X-acto knife with a No. 11 blade.
April 1 and 2 - Bobbin lacemaking for children 10 and older. Taught by Sandy Craig. Fee $30, by March 15, registration deadline. Materials cost $10, due April 1. Students complete a bookmark, enjoy 18th century games, stories and refreshments.
April 5, 12 and 19 - Calligraphy, taught by Pamela Host, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fee, including pens and paper, $30. Make greeting cards, invitations and letters.
WAKEFIELD FOUNDATION
March 5 - Artwork of Brush and Palette Club, through March 26; free reception today, 2-5 p.m.
RAWLS MUSEUM
