Three City Council members and an assistant city manager are heading to Miami this weekend to watch a car race and learn from tourist experts in that city.
The four, Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf, Vice Mayor W.D. Sessoms, Councilmember Linwood O. Branch III and Chief of Staff Oral Lambert, will fly down today to meet with public officials.
The schedule includes briefings about Miami's tourist-oriented policing program, the successful redevelopment of South Beach and ongoing convention development programs, Lambert said. The four will also tour the Miami Arena, Coco Walk and the site of the Marlboro Miami Grand Prix.
Beach officials have talked for more than two years about bringing a similar race, run with Indy-style cars on city streets, home. They are traveling to Miami to see the community impact of the race and the fanfare that goes along with it, Lambert said.
