PAROLEE ACCUSED OF AX ATTACK ON WOMAN

Michael Coker, 37, formerly of the 3800 block of Greenleaf Trail in Portsmouth, has been indicted in an attack on a woman at a Churchland shopping center.

The victim, Tammie L. Wainwright, 34, was in the parking lot of a grocery store in the Towne Point Square shopping center just before 9 a.m. Jan. 13 when she was struck several times in the back of the head with an ax. The attacker rode away on a bicycle.

Coker, who was on parole, has an earlier conviction for robbery. He was indicted on charges of malicious wounding and aggravated malicious wounding. He is being held at the Portsmouth city jail.
