Elizabeth City Middle School Principal Diane Bradford was named principal of the year for northeast North Carolina at a luncheon in Greenville Thursday.
``Makes it all worthwhile,'' Bradford said after returning to her school Thursday afternoon. ``All those long hours and hard work. It paid off.''
In her three years with the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank school system, Bradford has led the middle school through an overhaul that included a name change, nearly $2 million in construction and a revolution in curriculum and scheduling.
The school is engaged in four national education programs and is introducing a state-of-the-art media access system that will allow teachers to control video and other machines with cordless telephones in their rooms.
Bradford spent nearly 20 years in Alabama public schools before coming to Pasquotank County. She holds a bachelor's degree from Florence State University, a master's in guidance and counseling from the University of North Alabama, and an educational doctorate in school administration from Vanderbilt University.
Wachovia Bank of North Carolina sponsors the principal of the year program, which is administered by the state Department of Public Instruction. Bradford received $200 for her designation as Elizabeth City-Pasquotank principal of the year and is now one of six finalists for the $2,500 state award.
The statewide winner will be named in Winston-Salem on May 25.
Bradford's first order of business on returning to the middle school Thursday was attending a parent conference.
``Coming back to work brings you down to earth really fast,'' she said. by CNB
