Pernell Whitaker's schedule for the rest of 1995 is essentially set, but co-manager Lou Duva hinted Thursday there may be something bigger on the horizon for Whitaker than Gary Jacobs and Ike Quartey.
Jacobs is the mandatory defense of Whitaker's World Boxing Council welterweight title - which he will retain win or lose after fighting for Julio Cesar Vasquez's junior middleweight title Saturday. Whitaker is tentatively set to fight Jacobs in the summer and Quartey, the World Boxing Association welterweight title holder, in the fall.
Unless a mega-fight with Roy Jones can be arranged.
``It's almost to the point where we're down to a weight stipulation,'' Duva said. ``Don't be surprised.''
Jones is a world champion at 168 pounds and is almost as highly regarded as Whitaker when people start clicking off the world's best fighters, pound-for-pound.
The pounds between them would seem to be a problem. Whitaker is a welterweight who is moving up to fight Vasquez. Duva said it's a test run to see if Whitaker could take on Jones at 156 or 158.
``Do you know what a big fight that is?'' Duva said. ``Outside of a (Mike) Tyson-(George) Foreman fight, I think it would be the biggest-grossing fight there is out there.'' by CNB
