Charlie Stukes has resigned as head football coach of Oscar Smith High so he will have more time to watch his son play college football at the University of Virginia.
The Tigers were 10-40 in Stukes' five years as head coach. Oscar Smith finished 1-9 last fall and broke an 18-game losing streak with a 26-15 victory over Wilson in the sixth game of the season.
Stukes' son, Dwayne, who lives with his mother in Owings Mill, Md., was a standout wide receiver and defensive back at McDonough High this fall. He signed with Virginia during the national signing period last month.
``I felt I wouldn't be able to see him play as much as I wanted if I kept coaching, and he chose Virginia over Florida so that I could see him play,'' Stukes said. ``Plus, I'm working on a master's degree in administration, and grad school takes up a lot of my time.''
Oscar Smith has formulated a selection committee and is accepting applications for the opening. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
