Outer Banks resident Deborah Newcomb, 42, is the newest member of North Carolina's Nursing Scholars Commission.
Newcomb, the director of nursing for Britthaven Nursing Home of Nags Head, was appointed to the eight-member state board by Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight, D-Dare, last month. Newcomb is filling the unexpired term of Manteo resident Elizabeth Fearing, who resigned. Newcomb will remain on the board until June 30, 1997.
Newcomb will help award 475 scholarship loans to undergraduate and graduate students studying nursing at North Carolina schools. The renewable awards range from $3,000 to $5,000 annually for each undergraduate and are $6,000 each for graduate students. After graduation, scholarship recipients are expected either to serve as a nurse in North Carolina - one year for every year of money they received - or to repay the loan to the state.
