Bayside's LaShawn Jones played only one season of high school football, but his size, speed and penchant for making big plays convinced Virginia to give him a scholarship.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Jones received a qualifying score on the SAT on Thursday and will sign with the Cavaliers on Monday, he said.
A wide receiver and free safety for the Marlins, Jones will play offense for Virginia.
``They likened him to Herman Moore,'' Bayside coach Bill King said. ``Moore played basketball all through high school and didn't play football until his senior year. LaShawn is a tad shorter, but they are going to try him at wide receiver.''
Jones is more recognized for basketball. He was the Beach District player of the year this season and led the Marlins to the district and tournament titles.
Getting a Division I football scholarship came ``as a surprise,'' he said.
Jones considered East Carolina, Hampton University and Norfolk State before picking Virginia, he said.
``My campus visit was nice,'' he said. ``The coaching staff was nice to me, too.''
Jones caught 14 passes for 236 yards and five touchdowns last fall. He also returned a fumble and an interception for touchdowns and blocked four punts. ILLUSTRATION: LaShawn Jones played just a season of high school football, but
