Churchland's D. J. Dunbar and Kizzy Butler have been picked as the outstanding high school basketball players by the coaches of the city schools for the second year in a row.
Both are seniors.
Dunbar, the leading scorer in the Southeastern District with a 20.2 average, was in double figures in every regular-season game. A 6-3 swing player, Dunbar sparked Churchland to the district championship.
Butler, a 5-foot-2 guard who already has signed with Norfolk State, carried a 12.5 scoring average and was in double figures in 17 games as the Lady Truckers also won the district title.
Both are regarded as take-charge players when the game is on the line.
Joining Dunbar on the All-Portsmouth boys team are teammate Mike Holland, Wilson's Perez Bottoms and Norcom's Vic Johnson and Torrence Oxendine.
The other selections on the girls team are Churchland's Nicole Council and Michele Jarman, Norcom's Felicia Brown and Wilson's Latoya Owens.
The 6-3 Dunbar and the 5-10 Holland, a point guard, are the only repeaters on the boys team. Dunbar, Player of the Year in South Hampton Roads last season, had a one-game high of 43 points against Deep Creek. Holland maintained a 12.0 scoring average, in double figures in 15 of Churchland's games while in a playmaker's role.
Bottoms, a 6-1 junior forward who also competed on Wilson's cross-country team during this same season, topped the Presidents in scoring with a 15.2 average.
Bottoms was in double figures in 16 games and had a season-high 21 against Norcom. He was a second-team All-Portsmouth selection last year.
Johnson led Norcom's scoring with a 13.4 average and reached double figures in 14 games. He had a one-game high of 26 against Booker T. Washington. He is a 5-9 senior guard and also was on last year's second all-city squad.
Oxendine was elevated from last year's honorable mention list. He averaged 11.2 points and was in double figures in 13 games. He is a 6-4 senior forward.
The coaches placed Churchland's Marvin Rodgers on the second unit since he did not become eligible until mid-semester. A first-team pick last year, the 6-9 senior forward carried a 16.1 point scoring average and double-figure rebounding.
The other second-team picks are Churchland's Dion Langley and Clay Walton, Wilson's Darrius Edwards and Norcom's Roberto Pope. Walton, a 6-5 senior, also was chosen on last year's second unit.
Butler and teammate Council, a 5-8 junior, are the only holdovers from last year's All-Portsmouth girls team. Council paced all scorers in the city with an 18.4 ppg average. She had a single-game high of 30 and was the top 3-point shooter in Portsmouth.
The 6-foot Jarman, a senior, was a second-team All-Chesapeake player at Great Bridge last year. After transferring to Churchland, she provided the Truckers with solid under-the-basket strength in addition to scoring at an 11.6 per game clip.
Owens, Wilson's top scorer, is a 5-10 senior center. She had a 15.7 scoring average and was the city's second leading scorer. Last year she was a second-team selection.
Brown, a junior forward/center, was the scoring pacesetter for Norcom. She averaged 11.3 points per game. The 6-foot Brown also was among the premier rebounders in the district.
The second team includes one repeater from last year's No. 2 team, Churchland's Summer Speidell.
Also named to the second unit were Norcom's Tajuana Folston, Wilson's Antoniette Debrough and Regina Cowan and Churchland's Kim Elliot.
Churchland's Mac Carroll was picked as the boys coach of the year. Wilson's Jenson Baker was chosen as top girls coach. ILLUSTRATION: D.J. Dunbar was the leading scorer in the district
