Capt. Edward W. ``Red'' Hessel, USN, Retired, 81, of 1210 Daniel Ave., died on March 1st in Corvallis, Oregon.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, he at- tended the University of Cincinnati and the United States Naval Academy lettering in football at both. Having been commissioned in 1937 as a naval aviator, he served as CO VF 82 USS Bennington; executive officer USS L Lake Champlain; commanding officer USS F.D. Roosevelt.
Among his commendations are the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, Campaign Medal for capture of Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Okinawa. After retirement, L Capt. Hessel taught at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk. He was an ac- tive member of Church of the Good Shepherd, Meals on Wheels, Norfolk Sports Club, Men's Forum, SPCA and Special Olympics, and Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. He was the widow- er of Annabel Lumpkin Hessel, he is survived by nephews, Michael Hessel of Shedd, Ore., Stephen Hessel of Cor- vallis, Ore., Dr. Edward Hessel of San Diego, Calif.; nieces, Ann van Voorden of the Netherlands, Mary Kay Rod-H ham of Portland, Ore., Marjorie Nils- son of Lanham, Md., Suzanne Hessel of Waterbury, Conn., and eight great- nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Church of the Good Shepherd by Rev. Ross Wright. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers do- nations may be made to the Memorial Fund of Church of the Good Shepherd or Trinity Episcopal Church of Ports- mouth. Following the service, the fam- ily will receive friends at Memorial Hall of the church.
