CRIME LINE

Local police are asking public assistance in solving these cases:

NORFOLK

On Friday, Feb. 10, at 3:20 p.m., a delivery driver for H.B. Express stopped to use the pay phone at the 7-Eleven store in the 4000 block of Hampton Blvd.

While he was on the phone, another man approached and shot him.

The victim, Kevin Gallegos, 29, of Hampton, died a short time later at a local hospital.

The suspect is described as black, 6 feet tall and was wearing a green-hooded jacket and black pants. He was last seen walking east on 40th Street.

VIRGINIA BEACH

More than three years ago, a 21-year-old former Norfolk State University student and Marine Corps reservist was killed. The case has not been solved.

On Sunday, Feb. 9, 1992, about 3:30 a.m., Jason Walker left the Bridge Nightclub in the Newpointe Shopping Center on Newtown Road after a performance by rap artist Doo Doo Brown.

As Walker was driving his red Chevrolet Beretta through the parking lot, a man on the sidewalk was shooting a pistol. One of the bullets shattered Walker's car window and struck him in the head. He died a short time later.

The only information police have is the gunman was black, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and was wearing a black leather jacket.

On Feb. 24, about 6 p.m., a man was in his home in the 2200 block of Iowa St. when two unidentified men entered and held the victim at gunpoint in front of three 9-year-old children.

Shortly thereafter, the victim was brutally assaulted in the presence of the children.

Detectives have put together a composite of the men responsible for the crime. Both are described as black and in their 20s.

PORTSMOUTH

On Tuesday, Feb. 2, about 8 p.m., someone set fire to the George T. McLean Building at 435 Meander Road.

Although the building was vacant at the time, there was extensive damage.

Also, several vacant houses in the Parkview section have been set ablaze, and again arson is suspected.

Fires were set five times at four locations on Webster Avenue: 268, 270, 283, and twice at 276. All the fires occurred within a week.

One firefighter was seriously injured when a roof collapsed in one of the burning buildings.

Since Feb. 1, more than 30 acts of vandalism have been reported, all involving the smashing of vehicle windows and windshields.

The vehicles were parked on the street in front of the victims' homes.

The vandals used a pellet gun or a BB gun.

Investigators believe the vandalism was committed between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and midnight. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
