JAMES S. POWELL

James S. Powell, 71, of the 1400 block of Mount Vernon Ave., died March 4, 1995, in Maryview Hospital.

Mr. Powell was born in Franklin, Va. He had retired from Channel Furniture Co. as a truck driver and had also retired from Henry B. Gilpin Co. as a merchandise selector. He was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Temple Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Artrie W. Powell of Portsmouth; a sister, Ethel Thomas of Portsmouth; a brother, William Powell of Portsmouth; two aunts, Julia Hawkins of Maryland and Joyce Stephens of Franklin; two goddaughters, Bernice Sawyer Ridley of Richmond and Evelyn Sawyer of Portsmouth; two godsons, William Sorrell of Portsmouth and U.S. Army Colonel Glenn Melton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Mount Hermon Baptist Temple Church by the Rev. Leon J. Boone. Burial with military honors will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Corprew Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.
