James Edward West Sr., 82, of 311 Main St., died Saturday, March 4, 1995.
Mr. West, a native of Nansemond County, was founder and president of West Supermarket from 1942 to 1985. He was co-founder of the Smithfield Livestock Market in the early 1950s.
He was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church, sang in the choir for 43 years and was a member of the Fellowship Committee and the Baraca class.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche Holland West; a daughter, June W. Hurst of Smithfield; a son, James E. West Jr. of Plano, Texas; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be Tuesday, March 7, 1995, at 3 p.m. in St. Lukes Memorial Park, Smithfield, with Dr. Donald Rhoton officiating. The family will receive friends at their residence at 311 Main St. and suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, Va. 23431 or Smithfield Baptist Church Building Fund, 100 Wainwright Drive, Smithfield, Va. 23430. Colonial Funeral Home will handle the arrangements.
