A Hertford woman faces up to 30 years in prison and $1 million in fines after being convicted of embezzling about $32,000 from an Elizabeth City branch of First Citizens Bank and Trust Co.
Carol Anne Elliott, 44, was found guilty of eight counts of embezzlement after a jury trial Feb. 22 in U.S. District Court in Greenville.
Elliott, a former bank teller at the Holly Square branch, is expected to be sentenced in May by U.S. District Judge Malcolm J. Howard, according to a news release recently issued by U.S. Attorney Janice McKenzie Cole.
The maximum penalty for the crimes Elliott is convicted of is 30 years' imprisonment, $1 million in fines and a supervised release term of five years.
Testimony indicated that Elliott pilfered commercial night deposits from Oct. 23, 1992, to Jan. 4, 1993. Witnesses said night deposits were made, but money was never posted to customers' accounts.
Night deposits from Wal-Mart, Western Steer, Radio Shack and Tuck's Barbeque were among those listed in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury in October 1994.
