WHITHER SEAWOLF? The Navy will hold a public hearing March 29 at the Airport Hilton Hotel in Norfolk on which city should be the East Coast base for the new Seawolf submarine. Norfolk, New London, Conn., and Kings Bay, Ga., are being considered. The Navy prefers New London, according to a draft environmental impact statement to be discussed at the hearing, from 7-11 p.m. Copies of the statement are at Norfolk and Portsmouth libraries.
WANTED: TEAK BY THE TON. The government of Myanmar - formerly Burma - is donating 40 tons of teak for restoring the deck of the battleship North Carolina, a museum in Wilmington, N.C. Another 137 tons of the lumber is needed and the museum is trying to raise $750,000 in contributions. For information, call (910) 251-5797. Officials in Norfolk are considering whether to bid for a sister ship of the North Carolina's - the Iowa or Wisconsin - as a museum.
CAREER ALTERNATIVES: Sailors pursuing degrees in technology education at Old Dominion University can get credits for study at certain advanced Navy training schools. A new emphasis on technology education at ODU reflects research showing that teachers in the field are in demand. The courses are part of the school's military transition assistance program, designed to help enlisted personnel find a second career. Bachelor's and master's degrees are being offered at the ODU campus and at its Oceana Naval Air Station site.
YELLOWSTONE TO THE RESCUE: The crew of the Norfolk-based destroyer tender Yellowstone rescued occupants of a water taxi in the Bahamas after the boat began taking on water. More than 38 people were aboard the taxi Feb. 22 in Nassau when the bow began submerging. Members of the Yellowstone crew jumped in the water to save them and coordinated evacuation of the sinking vessel. The Yellowstone was in port for a liberty visit.
CLINTON CALLS ``IKE'' DAD: President Clinton delivered the good news to Seaman Ryan Crawford aboard the Norfolk-based aircraft carrier Eisenhower last week: Crawford's wife, Kerri, had given birth to a girl. The call was to demonstrate Red Cross emergency communications. The Ike is the Adriatic.

CONSOLIDATION: Two helicopter mine countermeasures squadrons are consolidating to save money, marking one of the first unions of active-duty and naval reserve squadrons. The combined squadron, HM 14, is based at Norfolk Naval Station and consists of 12 MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopters and 702 active-duty and reserve personnel.
CONVERSION: The amphibious assault ship Inchon was redesignated as a mine countermeasures support ship March 1 in preparation for its 13-month conversion to the new role at a Pascagoula, Miss., shipyard. The Inchon, formerly based in Norfolk, is the first in the new class. It will serve as command ship for mine countermeasure ships and aircraft.
