Buoyed by conservative political trends, the Pasquotank County Republicans named new officers at a county convention this week and promised to reinforce voting ranks before the 1996 national elections.
``It's an exciting time for all of us,'' said James A. Beales Jr., an Elizabeth City attorney who was named the new chairman of the Pasquotank GOP.
More than 60 Republicans gathered in the county courthouse Monday night to elect Beales and other party officers. Tom Marshall was named vice chairman; R.D. ``Pete'' Lacy, treasurer; and former Elizabeth City Mayor James Harrington, secretary.
``We did very well in the last elections, I think,'' said Beales, ``and we'll do better in the coming years.
``We're particularly anxious to add new members - young people, women and African-Americans,'' Beales said. ``The Republican Party has much to offer everyone in our area.''
For the first time, Beales said, the Republicans are organizing precincts in Pasquotank County.
``We've already organized eight of our 13 precincts and we expect to be fully organized in the near future,'' said Beales.
The GOP executive board will meet monthly in Pasquotank County, Beales said. He urged all registered Republicans to attend. The meetings will be held at Tuck's Restaurant in Elizabeth City on the first Monday of each month. by CNB
