Answering the question ``Should African Americans receive reparations?'' (Commentary, Feb. 26), Winston Daughtry of Murfreesboro, N.C., wrote:
How much more do they want? They are ungrateful and do not deserve another red penny. It is past time for blacks to take an inventory and get off the `pity pot' and earn a living instead of begging and looking for handouts.''
I am a single parent, working two part-time jobs and in college full time. I'm not looking for a handout, nor are others in my situation. But any assistance will help our situation. It's not that some of us plan to be single parents, but some men don't do their duty as a man or father.
I know that anything a person gets in life has to come through hard work and determination.
I feel that Mr. Daughtry isn't the only person who thinks along those lines. But would these people's attitude change if they were in the situation?
Before judging a person, people should walk a mile or two in his or her shoes.
