WEEKEND
CANNON FIRE erupted off the coast of Hampton Roads in March of 1862 between the Civil War battleships the Monitor and the Virginia. The engagement came to be remembered as ``The Battle of the Ironclads'' and naval warfare was forever altered. Weekend visitors to Fort Norfolk get a unique chance to witness that historic event, which ended in a draw 133 years ago. Seven oil paintings by 19th-century artist Benjamin Richardson, who watched the historic battle, will be on display along with other naval paintings. There'll also be a mock battle by two scale model replicas in the Elizabeth River, off the Fort. And Civil War re-enactors will be camped out at the site.. You'll find the Fort on Front Street at the south end of Colley Avenue on the banks of the Elizabeth River. Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. 625-1720.

TONIGHT
WHEN THE PLAGUE hits, who ya' gonna call? Dr. Dustin Hoffman, that's who. Hoffman is joined in ``Outbreak'' by Rene Russo (older actors' best girlfriend) in heading off a virus that, if left unchecked, could wipe out all of America and perhaps the world. With helicopter chases and Donald Sutherland as an evil military man, the movie attempts to combine commercial formulas with a very current, and disturbing, premise. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Kevin Spacey are also in the lab. In a year that has netted only one bona fide hit (``Legends of the Fall'') the film industry has high commercial hopes for this one. But will it get by the scrutiny of real doctors?
