THINGS TO DO FOR LESS THAN $5

OK, SO BEING a teenager is expensive and you don't have a lot to spend on weekend fun.

As a teen without a job, I understand. But I also know that almost any decent child can beg $5 from his or her parents. The problem then becomes what to do with your newfound riches. I have searched out an array of activities for around $5 that should please the masses.

The first is BrewBakers coffee house in Norfolk. When it comes to coffee houses, BrewBakers leans more toward the restaurant side because of the no-smoking rule and the full menu, but it still has the coffee house flavor.

BrewBaker's is cozy and comfortable. It has lots of neighborhood regulars, yet it's really diverse - everyone from grannies with walkers to teenagers with pins in their noses stops by. BrewBakers is also cool because it's locally owned and because the owners are attentive to what makes a hip coffee house hip.

All the desserts are homemade and the prices are decent: $1 for the first cup of coffee, with one free refill. (Hazelnut is recommended.) As for the happenings at BrewBakers, they don't have live music, but they are taking an interesting approach to the usual poetry readings.

They would like to work things out with a bookstore to sponsor book signings and possible recitation by the author. So if you now have dreams of working the crowd at BrewBakers, you had better find yourself a publisher.

The hours are 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. BrewBakers Coffee is located at 806 Spotswood Ave. near the Naro video store. If you're really bad at directions, the phone number is 625-2739.

OK, next cool thing. This guy named Chris from the band Institutional Corruption called my Infoline number and told me about an all-ages show that his band and four other bands are playing. The cost is $5 and it's a benefit for the Haven Family Center, a Norfolk shelter for the homeless. The show will be March 19 at the King's Head Inn, and it's supposed to start at 6 p.m. The King's Head is located on Hampton Boulevard across from Old Dominion University in Norfolk. Thanks for the tip, Chris. Call King's Head at 489-3224.

This option, strangely, is the more expensive of my suggestions. At Indian River Lanes on Saturday night, they have ``rock 'n' bowl.'' I know it sounds dumb, but this place is packed on Saturday's, and it is one of the best rock 'n' bowl's around. You have to call ahead to reserve a lane, so it can get a little tricky. Bowling from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. costs $25 a lane. From 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. it's $30. Ouch! But if you divvy that up among five or six people, it's not that bad. The lanes are located in Virginia Beach. Call 420-5840 to reserve a lane. MEMO: If you'd like to tip off Alicia on upcoming events or things to do, call
