Former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder will be the keynote speaker at the fifth annual Whitney M. Young awards banquet of the Urban League of Hampton Roads.
The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel.
The banquet is held each year to raise money for Urban League programs and to promote interracial dialogue and honor local residents for community service, said Mary L. Redd, executive director.
Wilder was selected as keynote speaker, Redd said, ``because he has demonstrated how one can build bridges. He built a coalition of whites and blacks to get elected. . . . It's an example for the entire community.''
Wilder was the nation's first elected African-American governor.
The Urban League also will present the following awards:
The A. Phillip Randolph Award to Cox Cable of Hampton Roads for providing television-media access to minorities.
The Lester B. Granger Award to Tymark Enterprises Inc., a Norfolk-based Burger King franchisee. Gilbert T. Bland, president of Tymark, has championed the entrepreneurial spirit in the African-American community, sponsored summer-job programs and is a role model, Redd said.
The Vivian C. Mason Meritorious Service Award to Celestyne Diggs Porter, a 1933 Hampton University graduate who was a Norfolk public school teacher and supervisor until 1977. She still works with student teachers.
The Marian P. Capps Education Award to H. Marks S. Richard, a mathematics professor and tutor at Norfolk State University. Richard was one of several plaintiffs in a 1983 federal lawsuit that helped create Norfolk's ward system for the City Council elections.
