The School Board decided on Thursday to offer Samuel B. Jones, principal of Franklin High School, the top job at Nansemond River High.
Jones, a Suffolk resident, has been Franklin's principal since 1987. With the exception of a stint as assistant principal of Southampton County High from 1972 to 1974, he has spent his career in the Franklin school district.
It's still unclear when Jones will start at Nansemond River, Eugene Davis, Suffolk's personnel director, said Friday. But Davis said Jones previously stated that he could come on board by July.
Jones could not be reached for comment Friday. Nansemond River is roughly twice as large as Franklin High, which has about 650 students.
In the summer of 1990, Franklin High was one of 15 public high schools in the nation to receive recognition for efforts to reduce or eliminate alcohol, tobacco and drug use by students.
Jones and two other school representatives attended a White House ceremony to receive an award.
Allen E. Breland, Nansemond River's former principal, was reassigned to a job in the facilities and planning department last November. Parris D. Carson, an assistant superintendent, has served as interim principal.
