The secondary continued to be of primary importance to the Washington Redskins Friday, as they announced the re-signing of veteran cornerback Darrell Green, while sources indicate that the club has agreed to terms with free safety Stanley Richard of AFC champion San Diego.
Meanwhile, Washington lost the tight end it wanted most when ex-Pittsburgh Steeler Eric Green snubbed a five-year, $12 million offer to sign with the Miami Dolphins. That leaves Dallas free agent Jay Novacek at the top of their wish list at tight end, although he was being hotly pursued by the Green Bay Packers.
If Novacek signs with the Packers, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Derek Walker would become Washington's top priority to fortify what is one of coach Norv Turner's top offensive positions.
The 6-foot-1, 197-pound Richard, who was the Chargers' No. 1 pick in the 1991 draft and a starter since his rookie season, signed a four-year deal worth $8.5 million. He likely will play free safety, while recently signed free agent James Washington, formerly of Dallas, will play strong safety.
The financial terms of Green's contract were not released, but his latest deal is for two years. Sources indicate he will receive an annual salary of approximately $2 million to complete in what will be his 14th and 15th seasons in the NFL, all with Washington.
``I did everything I could not to get on a plane,'' Green said when asked whether he considered any teams other than the Redskins, who selected him in the first round of the 1983 draft. ``All along, I wanted to be here.''
To free room under the salary cap for Green and Richard, the Redskins released middle linebacker Tyronne Stowe. That maneuver saves about $600,000 for Stowe.
NOTE: The Redskins announced that they have a new flagship radio station, WJFK-FM, which is a division of Infinity Broadcasting. The station announced it will immediately begin negotiations with long-time broadcast crew Frank Herzog, Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff. WTAR-AM 790 owns local broadcast rights to the Redskins.
