Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is looking for some able-bodied teens and adults to volunteer for a refuge spring cleaning between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.
Jobs to spruce up the refuge include repairing and cleaning purple martin boxes and laying gravel and clearing brush on walking trails. A beach cleanup and a tree planting project also are among the volunteer projects, said refuge biologist John Gallegos.
``We also will erect a silt fence around an area where we will construct a public fishing pond,'' Gallegos added.
Work clothes, gloves and sturdy shoes are a must for all participants, he said.
Sign-in begins at 8:30 a.m., and work begins at 9 a.m. At noon, the refuge will provide hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks for volunteers. The clean-up will continue until 4 p.m. for workers who are able to stay.
Call the refuge at 721-2412 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to register.
The clean-up is co-sponsored by the Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club, Virginia Beach Audubon Society, Chesapeake Bay Sierra Club, Sandbridge Civic League and refuge volunteers. by CNB
