The School Board's 5-4 election of D. Linn Felt as vice chairman Thursday created a flap.
Last month, after deadlocking 5-5 between Felt and Tim Jackson, the board passed a motion to table the issue until the board was back to a full 11-member contingent.
With Charles W. Vincent ordered off the board last month by a Circuit Court judge, the five members backing Felt brought the matter back for a vote Thursday. The strategic move caught Jackson supporters off guard.
Member Elsie Barnes said the decision ``violates the spirit of collegiality.'' Member Ulysses Van Spiva said Felt got the position by ``bogus means.''
``To my knowledge, nobody on this board has ever been elected vice chairman without six votes,'' Spiva said.
Voting for Felt were Robert W. Hall, Joseph D. Taylor, Susan L. Creamer, Chairwoman June T. Kernutt and Felt. Voting for Jackson were Barnes, Spiva, Ferdinand V. Tolentino and Jackson.
The board Thursday passed a resolution asking Circuit judges to immediately name an interim replacement for the seat held by Vincent, who was convicted on violating state ethics rules. Former Chairman James Darden resigned for family reasons.
