The staff of the Virginia Newspaper Project at the Library of Virginia is seeking help in locating issues of 41 African-American newspapers formerly published in the state.
The goal of the project, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, is to catalog and preserve all newspapers published in Virginia dating to the 17th century.
Among those being sought are copies of nine newspapers published in Norfolk: ``Advance,'' 1893-94, edited by R. Bagnall Jr.; ``American Ethiopian,'' 19??-1907, edited by W.A. Conway; ``Journal and Guide,'' 1901-1916, edited by P.B. Young (the library has already acquired later copies of the newspaper); ``News and Advertiser,'' 1900-1908, edited by J.E. Dickerson; ``Rambler,'' 1894-1898, edited by G.M. James and W.H. Haines; ``The Right Way,'' 1885, established by Joseph T. Wilson; ``Speaker,'' 1889-1893, edited by G.M. James; ``Spectator,'' 1887-1891, edited by G.L. Pryor; and ``Standard,'' 1889-1891, edited by Landon Jessup and D. Betts Robinson.
Anyone who has entire issues, not clippings, of these newspapers should contact Errol Somay of the Virginia Newspaper Project at (804) 786-8041. His address is the Library of Virginia, 11th Street at Capitol Square, Richmond, 23219. by CNB
