Jess H. Hawkins III of Greenville, regional manager of the Division of Marine Fisheries, has been named Wildlife Conservationist of the Year by the North Carolina Wildlife Federations.
Hawkins received the conservationist award for his work identifying critical habitats for American Shad, river herring and striped bass and classifying nursery areas for important estuarine fish and shellfish.
Hawkins was also cited for his work with the Marine Fisheries Commission as a policy analyst and as coordinator of activities for the nine working committees that develop fisheries management policies and rules. He also served on the Pamlico Environmental Response Team, which documented fish kills and other environmental problems on the Pamlico River.
Hawkins has worked nearly 18 years with the Division of Marine Fisheries. For the last six years, Hawkins has served as district manager of the division's Pamlico District, with regional headquarters in Washington. by CNB
