WOMAN TRAPPED IN CAR AFTER COLLISION

A tractor-trailer and a Ford Mustang collided late Tuesday on Interstate 64 just west of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, trapping a woman in the sports car more than two hours.

The accident happened in the westbound lanes around 9:15 p.m. near the County Street exit. State police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said it appeared the driver of the Mustang tried to pass a tractor-trailer on the left shoulder and collided with the truck. The car was dragged 290 feet and was pinned against a concrete retaining wall, Van Dame said.

The trapped woman was conscious while fire and rescue crews worked to free her, police said. She was the only one reported injured.

The crash snarled traffic several hours as police routed passing motorists along the interstate shoulder.

The woman was freed from the crumpled car at 11:30 p.m. and was taken to a Peninsula hospital. Van Dame said the woman's injuries appeared minor. Her name was not released.

The accident is under investigation.
