SOME AIRPORT INFORMATION

I take this opportunity to provide Alfred Jacoks some information regarding one of the matters he addressed in his letter in the March 2 Compass.

He asked, ``When will the Norfolk International Airport sign be installed on the base that was completed years ago on the corner of Azalea Garden Road and Norview Avenue? I believe that Council appropriated funds for it last year.''

I assume he is referring to the sign that is located on the northeast corner of Norview Avenue and Azalea Garden Road. The concrete ``base'' to which you refer has a sign ``Welcome to Norfolk'' on the east side, which is read as you leave the airport. This specific sign was never intended to identify ``Norfolk International Airport.''

At the east end of the Norview Avenue bridge, at the entrance to the airport, there is a similar sign that does, in fact, have ``Norfolk International Airport'' on it. Both of these signs were financed by the Norfolk Airport Authority and did not involve any city funds.

You may also be aware of a planning project now under way that is referred to as the ``Airport Gateway Landscape Project.'' This is a partnership project between the Norfolk Airport Authority and the city of Norfolk that will lead to the beautification of the four corner parcels of land at the intersection of Azalea Garden Road and Norview Avenue.

This project is being coordinated by the city's Department of City Planning and Codes Administration, with the funding being provided by the Airport Authority.
