FOOTBALL HAS BEEN a major part of Donald Hill's life since he was a quarterback for John Yeates High School.
Now an assistant coach with the Baltimore Football Club of the Canadian Football League, Hill is working with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities to encourage local youngsters to get into the sport.
Hill grew up in the Hollywood section of Suffolk, graduated from Yeates in 1987, and went to Virginia Union University on a football scholarship. Hill worked for two years as a receivers' coach at Hampton University before joining the Baltimore Football Club.
At his urging, the club held one of its four national tryout camps at Nansemond River High School. In mid-May, Hill, along with friends from the CFL and the NFL, will hold a one-day educational/football fundamentals camp at Birdsong Recreation Center for football players from elementary to high school ages.
Hill plans to bring at least a dozen NFL and CFL players to Birdsong, as well as English and math tutors, and a conflict-resolution specialist. He hopes local business will sponsor the program.
