Lawmakers reviewing budgets for state natural and economic resource agencies are recommending several sweeping cuts in some environmental programs. But on their initial review of existing coastal programs, they left that budget untouched.
Members of the Joint Appropriations Subcommittee on Natural and Economic Resources made no additional cuts in the state's share of the $3.4 million budget for the Division of Coastal Management for 1995-96 and 1996-97.
The agency, which receives about $1.4 million from the state, is slated for a $3,038 reduction in appropriations for supplies and equipment under Gov. James B. Hunt Jr.'s recommended budget for the next two years. The agency gets about $1.9 million from the federal government, as well.
On Wednesday, the committee began a review of the Division of Environmental Management's operating budget and targeted the Partnership for the Sounds for a possible 50 percent cut in its current programs and staff. by CNB
