Some illegally taxed federal retirees who missed a filing deadline or returned incomplete forms in the settlement of a lawsuit against the state will get a second chance.
Gov. George F. Allen signed a bill Tuesday renewing the settlement offer to pensioners who originally were excluded due to ``circumstances beyond their control.''
Retirees who may be eligible include those who did not meet deadlines for filing forms, for filing complete information and for accepting or rejecting the settlement. All of the deadlines were Nov. 1.
State Tax Commissioner Danny M. Payne said notification of the supplemental program will be mailed by April 14 to eligible retirees who have been identified. Federal retirees who do not receive forms but believe they are eligible can obtain forms from the Department of Taxation. May 15 is the deadline for returning the forms.
