SHOOTING IN PORTSMOUTH LEAVES MAN DEAD, TEEN HURT

One man was killed and a teenager was wounded in a shooting Wednesday night in the Ida Barbour community downtown, and even as police were investigating the incident, more shots were fired around them.

But the suspected gunmen in the second incident didn't get away. They found their path blocked by the police.

The four men in the car that the shots allegedly came from were being questioned late Wednesday - about both shooting incidents. Their names were not available.

Police spokesman Jimmy Ennis said officers were called to the 1100 block of Barbour Drive about 8:15 p.m.

They found one man who had been shot lying on the ground behind an apartment house. A short distance away, they found a 17-year-old who had also collapsed from a gunshot wound.

It's believed the two victims were near each other when they were shot.

The first victim, Steven Parker, 39, of the 1100 block of South St., was pronounced dead at the scene. The teenager, whose name was being withheld because of his age, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Police were just beginning the task of interviewing residents and witnesses when a car pulled off South Street onto Barbour Drive and someone inside it opened fire.

Ennis, who had just arrived at the scene, said there was near-panic. ``Everyone started screaming, scattering, running in every direction. . . . We didn't know what was going on.''

But officers moved fast. The men in the car were quickly surrounded.

``Officers were right there,'' Ennis said. It helped that the men had nowhere to drive. ``There was a police car around the corner, blocking the driveway to protect the crime scene. There was nowhere to go. They had to stop.''

Ennis said it was unclear if the men in the car realized police were on the scene. ``We don't even know what they were shooting at,'' he said.

There were no reports of any injuries from the second shooting. Police did recover at least one weapon from the car, and it will be checked to see if it is related to the earlier shootings.
