ACCUSED OF SHAKING BABY

A 19-year-old man has been charged with shaking an infant so hard on Christmas Day that the child suffered permanent damage.

A warrant was obtained March 10 for the arrest of Jimmie T. Swann Jr. of 1820 Prentis Ave. on a charge of aggravated malicious wounding. Swann is accused of shaking 4-month-old Kiara S. Burden of 2210 Columbus Ave. after the child's mother, Sheila R. Burden, left the infant at Swann's home.

When Burden returned to Swann's home to pick up her daughter, she found Kiara Burden lying in her own vomit in a bedroom, according to a police report. Burden took her daughter to the hospital, where an examination revealed that the infant had blood in her spinal fluid and near her brain. The child was admitted to a hospital.

Police said the baby is thought to have been permanently damaged because of the abuse. She is now 7 months old.
