Police have arrested a 22-year-old man who they think fired into a group of people, including several police officers, shortly after a man was shot to death Wednesday night at the same location.
Larry S. Pittman, 22, of the 600 block of McLean St. was charged Thursday with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying a concealed weapon.
Police spokesman G.A. Brown said Pittman was with four other men in a car that the shots came from about 8:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Barbour Drive.
Police had arrived at the scene to investigate a fatal shooting and were beginning to interview witnesses when a car pulled off South Street onto Barbour Drive and someone inside it opened fire.
Police reacted quickly, immediately surrounding the car.
``It has not been established what the target was or what was being shot at,'' Brown said.
When police arrived at the Barbour Drive location they found one man who had been shot lying on the ground behind an apartment house. A short distance away, they found a 17-year-old who had collapsed from a gunshot wound.
Police think the two victims were near each other when they were shot.
The first victim, Steven Parker, 39, of the 1100 block of South St., was pronounced dead at the scene.
The teenager, whose name was being withheld because of his age, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was in stable condition Thursday.
