The School Board voted 6-1 Thursday to adopt Superintendent Richard D. Trumble's $86.2 million operating budget for 1995-96 - a document that assumes the city's share will remain $25.2 million.
If the City Council approves that budget as presented, cuts will be seen in areas such as maintenance, magnet school stipends, and new or replacement teaching equipment.
Board members lamented the ``bare-bones'' budget, but several said the city's financial pinch left no alternative.
Board member Ray A. Smith Sr. opposed the budget because he said the district needed to request more city money. The City Council has budgeted $25.2 million annually for schools since 1992-93. Board members James E. Bridgeford and Lawrence W. I'Anson Jr. were absent.
Last week, the board urged Trumble to increase the anticipated city share in his budget. Thursday, he showed the board another spending plan that included an extra $1 million from the city for several maintenance projects, but he encouraged the board to accept his original plan. The city also is pressed for cash, he said.
Trumble will squeeze spending for travel, supplies and repair work for the rest of this school year to come up with $1.02 million to buy equipment, 11 buses and new math books for next school year.
