INFLATION HOLDS STEADY, HOUSING DOWNTURN SLOWS

Consumer inflation rose by 0.3 percent in February while housing starts fell 2.6 percent, the government said. The inflation increase was the same as in January, which means that inflation so far in 1995 is running at an annual pace of 3.7 percent, a full percentage point ahead of last year. Housing starts in January had fallen 12 percent.

Financial markets pushed indices like the Dow Jones industrial average to record highs. The rally reflected hopes that other signs of a slowing economy will keep the Federal Reserve from raising interest rates. (Associated Press) by CNB
