It's safe to say that the Princeton and North Carolina men's lacrosse teams, two of the nation's premiere squads, have had a rough go of it this season.
And when these two powerhouses clash this afternoon in the second Hampton Roads Lacrosse Classic at Old Dominion University, both will be vying for respectability.
Princeton, which won last year's NCAA national championship with an overtime goal against Virginia, has started slowly this year, winning only one of three games. The Tigers lost 13 players to graduation, including all-everything goalie Scott Bacigalupo. They began the season ranked fourth in the nation.
North Carolina is also rebuilding this year, losing ACC Player of the Year Ryan Wade and leading scorer Gregg Langhoff. The Tar Heels (3-1) began the season ranked seventh in the nation, their lowest preseason ranking in years.
However, the team's most tragic loss occurred Jan. 26 when sophomore midfielder Kevin Reichardt was killed by a gunman in downtown Chapel Hill.
Last year Princeton clobbered the Tar Heels, 16-9.
The teams meet at 2 p.m. today at ODU's Foreman Field. The eighth-ranked ODU Lady Monarchs' lacrosse team will challenge the USA women's team at noon. And after the UNC-Princeton game, Hampton-Sydney's men's team will play Nazareth College at 4:30 p.m. in Division III action. by CNB
