If you like beautiful orchids, visit ``A Symphony of Orchids'' on Friday, Saturday and next Sunday at Chesapeake Square Mall. The free show is presented by the Tidewater Orchid Society. Plants will be available for sale.
Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Chesapeake Square Mall is off of Interstate 664, Exit 11B, on Portsmouth Boulevard in Chesapeake. Call Jim Bridges, 481-5352.
Day of family fun
The Virginia Tech Research Center on Diamond Springs Road in Virginia Beach will have a ``family and kids'' open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The event sounds like an old-fashioned county fair, on a smaller scale. There will be a greenhouse tour with special plant cuttings for children, bee-keeping demonstrations, 4-H students with their livestock, an insect display and an antique tractor display. It's all free. Call 363-3907.
Let asparagus take root
Now's the time to plant asparagus roots, sometimes called ``crowns.'' The new variety recommended by most universities is Jersey Knight. It's said to be far better than older varieties. The breeder-grower in New Jersey still says you should wait three years before cutting, but get your crowns in the ground now. Garden centers carry the roots. For direct ordering, call (609) 358-2548. MEMO: MORE REMINDERS: G2
