Theresa Furman dominated the 33rd annual Portsmouth Women's Bowling Association City Tenpin Tournament, walking off with three handicap and one scratch championship awards.
Furman, a 149-average bowler, won both the scratch and handicap all-events titles. She had a nine-game pinfall of 1,618 with 366 pins handicap for an overall 1,984.
Furman won in handicap singles with 675. She also was a member of the handicap team winners, the Hopefuls. The Hopefuls totaled 2,434. Other team members were Gayle Hess, Treva Umberger and Saye Meagher.
Two years ago Furman paired with Margaret Jones to win scratch doubles and was on the winning scratch team.
With the same four bowlers, the Lucky Ladies, who swept team honors last year, took the scratch title in this year's competition at Scott Center in the Naval Shipyard. Team members were Pat McLennan, Carol Sigmon, Sonja Gill and Jones. Lucky Ladies hit 1,936, nine pins less than last year's winning total.
Scratch laurels in doubles went to Diana Wetmore and Laura Zimmerman with 1,021. Zimmerman was last year's handicap all-events winner.
Handicap doubles titlists were Carolyn Smith and Carolyn Hofler with 1,311. The two surpassed last year's winning score by 29 pins.
The scratch singles winner was Marie Cool, a 157-average bowler who rolled a 571 series.
The first Tidewater Mixed Championship Tenpin Tournament will be held in June at two area centers under the sponsorship of The Portsmouth Women's Bowling Association, the Tidewater Women's Bowling Association and the Norfolk Bowling Association.
The tournament will be over two weekends (June 10-11 and June 17-18) with the team event at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven and singles and doubles at Indian River Lanes.
Teams will consist of two males and two females. Doubles will be one male and one female. Entry fee will be $13 per event.

BOWLER OF THE WEEK honors go to Rick Phillips, who chalked up a three-game house record series at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven.
Phillips shot a 300 game on his way to an 803 series, one pin higher than the previous record held by Todd Allred.
Phillips opened with 267 and closed with 236 in the Friday Nite Misfits League.
TENPIN TOPICS: Another 300 was pitched during the week by Rick Santander in the Funseekers League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. In the same league Michelle Van Wagner earned Century Club honors with a 246 game in a 632 series. She averages only 139. . . . Also vaulting 100 over in a game was Pat Parrish, who averages 149 and shot 255 in the Globe Rollers League at Pinboy's of Military. . . . Drew Corbett slammed a 290 game on his way to a 793 series in the Thursday Nite Owls League at Pinboy's of Western Branch. His other games were 267 and 236. . . . Matt Forrester is taking bows for a 248 game in the Saturday Youth League at Indian River. . . . Bill Womack registered a 164 triplicate in the Christ United Methodist Church League at Pinboy's of Military. . . . Bobby Bailey, a Prep bowler in the youth league at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven, became a Century Clubber with a 223 game, exactly 100 pins over his average. . . . Danny McDermott bashed out a 280 single in the Monday Scratch Doubles League at Pinboy's of Chesaapeake.
DUCKPIN DATA: Blossoming out as one of the future lanes stars is Victory Youth League bowler Lee Hoggard. Hoggard, a fastballer, racked up six straight strikes en route to a 203 game and 427 series. The 15-year-old Hoggard, who was awarded the National Duckpin Youth Association Star of the Month award in January for a 185 game, carried a 113 average before this outburst. In the same league Kendra Allen rolled games of 151, 152 and 166 for a torrid 469 series. . . . Pete Cubilla heaved a 192 game in his 447 set in the Tuesday Major Trio League at Bowlarama. . . . Get Butch Warren to tell you about the night he ran into Kathy Ireland. . . . Industrial League bowlers came up with some big singles. Ronnie Ketchum fired 181, Paul Sandefur had 178 and Raymond Askew and Jim Boykin each shot 177. . . . A Bowlarama Youth League team of Bobby Coley (417), Charlie Gower (386) and Shawn Meador (403) combined to soar 162 pins over average. . . . Lydie Hoggard and Van Malone defeated Wanda Strawderman and David Leffler in a rolloff for the second-round title in the Elimination Doubles League. . . .
