It was only Friday that, in the minds of many, the basketball team representing Old Dominion University was a blip on the NCAA tournament screen, about to be gobbled up by an imagined Goliath.
Conventional wisdom suggested that Villanova, seeded third in the East Regional and hailing from the mighty Big East Conference, would turn the 14th-seeded Monarchs, from the humble Colonial Athletic Association, every which way but loose.
Well, as you know by now, the mighty has fallen and ODU is just one victory away from the NCAA Sweet 16. The Monarchs from Norfolk meet sixth-seeded Tulsa today at about 2:40 p.m.
And this time, ODU believers outnumber the skeptics. MEMO: Main story on page C1.
