Mrs. Madeline B. Evans Brown, 88, died Saturday, March 18, 1995, at the Eastern Star Home in Sumter, S.C.
Born in Poplar Branch, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin B. and Martha Ann Owens Bateman.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class, the Joy Club, the W.M.U. and the Silvertone Choir; she was a member of the Sumter Chapter (NU)188 Order of Eastern Star where she held several positions for a number of years.
She graduated from W.T. Griggs High School in Poplar Branch, North Carolina, and East Carolina Teacher's College in Greenville, North Carolina.
She taught in the public schools in North Carolina for a few years, and worked in the U.S. Post Office in Grandy, North Carolina for a number of years.
She was twice married, first to the late Orion C. Evans then later to the late James F. Brown.
Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy E. Elliott (Mrs. D.P. Elliott, Jr.) of Rimini, South Carolina; a son, Carlton R. Evans of Panama City, Florida; a step-daughter, Joyce B. Pooler of New Port Richey, Florida; a sister, Mildred B. Garrington of Sumter; a granddaughter; 3 grandsons; 2 step-granddaughters; 2 step-grandsons; 3 great-grandchildren; a number of step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Louisa B. Summa; a sister, Fannie B. Corbell, and a brother, Benjamin Otto Bateman.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10:00 O'Clock Monday Morning in the First Baptist Church of Sumter with the Rev. James Goodroe officiating.
Interment will be in the Poplar Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Grandy, North Carolina at 11:00 O'Clock Tuesday Morning.
Pallbearers will be the following Grandsons, D.P. Elliott, III, Ray Elliott, Brian Dargan Elliott, and Robert W. (Bobby) Richardson; nephews and Theron Cook. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Philip H. Brandt, Dr. W. Strat Stavrou, the ladies of the Fidelis Sunday School Class, and the Joy Club members of the First Baptist Church, Eastern Star members, staff and residents of the Eastern Star Home. Memorials may be made to the Eastern Star Home, 1267 N. Main St., Sumter, S.C. or the Connie Maxwell Children's Home, Greenwood, S.C.
The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Sunday and other times at the home of Mr. & Mrs. D.P. Elliott, Jr., Rimini, S.C. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
