CDR. SMOKEY BLAKELY

CDR. Smokey Blakely, USN Retired, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, died of cancer March 17, 1995.

CDR. Blakely was born in Sheridan, Arkansas, August 18, 1921, to Arron L. and Vera Nall Blakely. He was preceded in death by his brother Howard Blakely.

He married the former Eloise L. Cook of Vista, California, on February 7, 1947. He became a widower in October 1981. They had two children, Susan Diane born in 1948 and Harry James Jr. born in 1952.

He attended Arkansas Teachers College, and served as an Officer in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Aviator for 28 years. He had lived many places around the world before retiring in 1970.

Smokey committed his life to the Lord in June 1994. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Tammy Blakely of Chesapeake, VA, his daughter and son-in-law Susan and Chris Roberts of Snellville, GA., his brother and sister-in-law Hubert and Pauline Blakely of Sheridan, Ark., his sister-in-law Gearline Blakely of Little Rock, Ark., his nephew Harvey Blakely of Little Rock, Ark., his grandchildren, Jennifer Blakely Daggs and husband Steve of Fort Worth, Texas, Chris Roberts, Jr., and Lauren-Grace Roberts of Snellville, Ga., and his great-grandchild Sarah Renee Daggs of Fort Worth, Texas.

The family will receive friends Monday evening, March 20, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel, 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, Va.

Funeral services will be held in Sheridan, Arkansas, by the Buie Funeral Home. Burial will be at Lost Creek Cemetery in Sheridan, Arkansas. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
