Mrs. Annie Mary Porter Hedgepeth, 90, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 1995, after a brief illness.
She was a native of Southampton County and was the daughter of the late Willie Herman and Mattie Cook Porter. She was predeceased by her husband, George Dewey Hedgepeth in 1972, by her daughter Josephine Hancock in 1983 and by her devoted sister-in-law Naomi Hedgepeth Whitley in December 1993. Mrs. Hedgepeth, affectionately known as ``Mama Annie,'' was a kind and gentle woman. She had been a lifelong member of the Mount Horeb United Methodist Church and had been active in the Franklin Senior Citizens when she was in good health.
Mrs. Hedgepeth is survived by one daughter, Dorothy H. Wilson, and her husband, Woodrow, of Courtland; two brothers, Ray L. Porter and Cecil L. Porter, both of Franklin; three sisters, Arie P. Wilkens of Suffolk and Bessie P. Seldomridge and Lydia P. Griggs, both of Franklin, and a sister-in-law, Mildred Hedgepeth Vaughan of Franklin; seven grandchildren, June Gladding of Fairfax, Va., Martha Hallowes of Jacksonville, Fla., Garth Hancock Jr. of Richmond, Susan H. Duke and Jo Ann H. Blair of Franklin, John Branton Wilson of Houston, Texas, and Lisa Wilson of Courtland; 10 great-grandchildren, Anne Stuart Gladding, Elizabeth Fontaine Gladding, Travis Hancock Fuller, Eric Britton Fuller, Sarah Louise Hancock, Garth Stuart Hancock III, Ryan Cadmus Duke, Scott Hancock Duke, Candace Rey Duck and Jonathan Andrew Wilson; one great-great-grandson, Jacob Hancock Fuller; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 1995 at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, by the Rev. Pat B. Toney and Dr. Gary R. Powell. Interment will be in Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the residence (26588 E. Nottoway Drive, Courtland). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Mount Horeb United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. James Bryant, 25165 Gen. Thomas Highway, Newsoms, Va. 23874.
